Under the Sun
“Under the Sun by Maisie Aletha Smikle
The year was seventeen ten
When I turned ten
I played with Maggy my hen
And wrote a skit for a friend
I fed Maggy corn
That was fetched from the barn
And milked the goats
For breakfast I made porridge from oats
On a bench I sat
Eating my Pop
When out flew Maggy my hen
From her pen
I left my meal
This was unreal
The hen had left her coop
So I got some grain and stooped
Then called out to Maggy my hen
Maggy O Maggy come back to your pen
The hen flapped her wings
Her leg was caught between two strings
Two men got my poor hen
They grabbed me and my hen
And stuffed us in a pen
Then sold us for a stipend
My precious hen they took
Made fire slaughter and cook
Then gulped water from a nearby brook
My poor neck was hooked
In chains like a crook
It must be a nightmare
The crooks were here
To get more than their share
Have I died and gone to hell
I simply couldn’t tell
I always do good
And was never misunderstood
Are these vultures
One could not tell
Their skin looked like the skin of bald head vultures
O dear me roaming wingless vultures
Are these aliens from hell
One could not tell
They looked like me head hands and feet
They don't have four feet
O Lord I did not make it to heaven
Even though I had forgiven
Heated red hot metal pierced my body
Steam gushed from my broiling flesh
There is no doubt these are the demons of hell
Brandishing fiery stones and red hot iron
Burning those who did not make it to heaven
Shoving them into hell’s decked unlit pit
The year was seventeen ten
When I turned ten
Maggy my hen flew from her pen
And the sun stopped shining at half past ten”

Litter
“Litter by Maisie Aletha Smikle
You want me not
Am inedible left to rot
Am unusable to you
And treasure to someone new
Am litter
Don't use me for batter
Or to make fried fritter
Am just matter that doesn’t matter
Rejected unwanted misplaced
I have a place
It's no disgrace
However where am placed is a disgrace
On the beach in the market or on the street
Where you meet to play shop and eat
I should be out of sight
In a bin anchored tight
Or some where
Where I can rest in piece
And not be tossed about from place to place
Littering everywhere like heaps of fallen snow
I can be recycled too
And use to make things brand new
Bury burn or reuse just choose
Don't misuse or abuse
And dump me where I don't belong
Left for the winds and rain to take me along
Wherever it goes
Like am your foe
Treat Earth kindly
Place me in a bin where I belong
Even litter has a place
It's no disgrace”

Banana
“Banana by Maisie Aletha Smikle
Ripe banana green banana
Boil banana bake banana
Roast banana fried banana
Shred banana mash banana
Banana porridge
Banana bread
Banana cake
Banana flake
Banana pudding
Banana dumpling
Banana muffin
Banana punch
Banana at breakfast
Banana at lunch
Banana for snack
Banana at supper
Chocolate joined banana
Peanut butter pineapple papaya
Peach strawberry blueberry cherry
Ice cream and whip cream too
They got on a banana boat
Manned by a bearded goat
And made a banana float
While sailing around the moat
Banana got festive
And turned into a balloon
Then made a banana cartoon
Where banana got whipped into a dip
Banana fritter banana batter
Banana is whipped
And beaten into batter
Banana split finding solitude with nuts on a sundae”

Waterfall
“Waterfall by Maisie Aletha Smikle
Soothing water gushing from the rocks
Hastens to meet the rivers and streams
That meet in the ocean deep
Never to reach a mountain peak
Soft mist rises from the lunging gush
As crystal water plunges down in a rush
Carried by the gentle breeze
Like a balm it calms the soul with ease
It dims the heat and cools the air
Trickles on the grassy meadow
And on the sand beneath
Cooling pebbles for your feet
As you walk the sandy shore
Inhaling cool mist as you tour
And watch the little birds soar
Chirping and singing like never before
Beautiful waterfall
So splendid and so tall
Climb to the top
And view the backdrop
Mountains elegantly towering
Over hills and plains beneath
Casting shadows
On lush green meadows
Crystal clear water drops
Naturally pure to the very last drop
Nature is kind nature is fine
Nature is undoubtedly divine”

Christmas
“Christmas by Maisie Aletha Smikle
Smiles gifts and laughter fill the air
Families so dear
Gather and share
Love and happy cheer
Mary gave birth to Christ Jesus
Gloriously famed is He
People are happy on His birthday
They meet to celebrate this day
On Christ's birthday
There were gifts of myrrh
Frankincense and gold
Celebrating His birth that was foretold
Christmas day is Christ’s birthday
Once a year
Christ is cheered
For coming into the world
Woes and foes
Are forgotten
And joy and peace
Are release
Lights blink
Twinkle twinkle
Beckoning good wishes
To come in
Snow falling on roof tops
Cookies cooling on stove tops
Smoke whistling from the chimneys
Calling out to Santa on his sleigh
Don't come down tonight
It is frosty as frost bite
If you come down the chimney
You will be toasty as a toast
So on and on Santa goes
Round and round the globe
Delivering good wishes and happy cheers
And thanking God for Christ’s birth”
